Weather system ends game in top of third

YORK – The weather has not been very good to the York 18-U Seagulls REC team.
Several of their scheduled contests this year have been lost due to wet playing fields or thunderstorms in the area.
Thus was the case Wednesday night when the McCool Junction 18-U team, came to town, and Mother Nature made an appearance in the top of the third to end the game with York on top 6-0.
Wednesday night’s storm shortened game marked the end of the regular season for the Seagulls.
In the bottom of the first after starting pitcher Sydney Wiemer had worked a scoreless top of the frame, leaving the bases loaded, the Seagulls went to work in the bottom of the second to open a quick lead.
After a lead-off single from Christina Hansen, the YHS graduate stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, a ground ball misplayed by the McCool third baseman allowed Hansen to score and give the Seagulls a 1-0 lead.
McCool Junction threatened again in the second when two singles put runners at first and third before Wiemer coaxed a slow roller to second for the unassisted out and that preserved the 1-0 Seagulls lead.
In the bottom of the second, York opened the scoring parade with singles off the bats of Wiemer, Hansen, Katie Kaliff, Alex Hitz, and the big blow, a two run triple from Tara Starkey. Also picking up RBI’s were Kaliff and Hitz.
As the McCool Junction girls were coming to the plate in the top of the third a few claps of thunder along with some lightning caused the game to be called at that time.
Officially the two teams would have to play at least 3 1/2 innings for the game to be a win for the York team.
The Seagulls will open REC League Tournament play on Saturday June 27 at Meridian.
