Buetow tosses gem in loss

News-Times/Ken Kush York second baseman Brady Miller makes the dive and the catch of this lazy fly ball in the first inning action Thursday night at Levitt Stadium. The York Seniors out hit the Waverly Seniors, but five errors led to two unearned runs in the 3-1 loss.

Seniors blunders spell defeat

YORK – When your team is on a hot streak, jam shots and bloopers fall for hits, and your team is able to overcome a few errors.

When your team is going bad, line drives are hit right at the opposing fielders, and those errors seem to multiply and cost a higher price.

Thursday York starter Kirk Buetow deserved a better fate, tossing a five hitter against the Waverly Seniors, but five Cornerstone Senior errors led to two unearned runs and the Seniors dropped a 3-1 decision in the first round of the Cornerstone Senior Classic at Levitt Stadium.

The loss dropped the York squad to 4-11, and it was their seventh loss in a row.

“When you get in a slump like we are in, it’s easy to start yelling at each other and pointing fingers, but that is all counter productive,” commented York Senior head coach Erik Gray. “The last two games we have hit the ball well. However when things are not going your way, those hard hit balls are usually right at the other team. If we make the routine plays tonight, we win the game.”

Errors were costly in the first frame for the Bankers, as the Waverly team put up two unearned runs on two York throwing errors that allowed both runs to score.

This came after a top of the first inning where the Seniors wasted a golden opportunity as Trent McGraw opened with a single and Matt Hansen walked to set the table for the 3-4-5 hitters. They, however, became strikeout victims, 1-2-3 of Waverly starter Levi Clifton, who struckout 10 in the win and completed the game with a six hitter.

In the bottom of the second, the Waverly team got a solo home run into the left field bleachers from Luke Tewes to account for all their scoring.

The York team got their only run in the top of the fourth when Bret Gardner singled, followed by an infield single off the bat of Brady Mills. With two outs, Drew Danielson, who went 2-3 in the game drilled a shot off the foot of Clifton that skipped into centerfield and drove in Gardner with the only run for the York team.

The Seniors could not get to Clifton again as he worked a 1-2-3 fifth and sixth, before giving up a one out hit to Danielson in the seventh. York could do nothing with the opportunity as the game ended on Clifton’s 10th K of the night.

“Kirk did a great job tonight, we just didn’t give him much help at all,” stated Gray. “Kirk has been our most consistent pitcher and he can throw three pitches and locate them well for strikes. We just have to come out here on Saturday and keep at it, things will change, it’s just a matter of time.”
