Kaczor leads West victory in Eight-Man Classic

HASTINGS, Neb. – Brett Kaczor isn't the type of football player who only wants to have the ball in his hands.

“I love offense,” said the quarterback from Ewing. “But it'd be hard to never hit anybody on defense again.”

Kaczor didn't get the opportunity to put any hits on the East team on defense during Saturday's Sertoma Eight-Man Classic, but he levied plenty of damage on offense.

Kaczor ran for a record 132 yards and passed for 166 – 2 yards away from another record – to lead the West to a 32-22 win at Hastings College.

“I told (Kaczor) he made his high school coach (West assistant Brock Eichelberger) smart for four years,” said West head coach Randy Geier of Wauneta-Palisade. “He's a player.”

East head coach Ron Lund of Dodge praised Kaczor, who ran for two touchdowns and passed for another.

“Every time we had him trapped back there, he'd break a tackle or buy extra time and find an open receiver. He's tremendous,” Lund said. “Not to take anything away from the rest of their team, because they all did a good job, but he was a one-man show.”

Kaczor felt comfortable running the West's offense.

“Coach Geier has a little different system, but it pretty much looked like what we ran during the regular season,” said Kaczor, a Nebraska Wesleyan recruit. “It was easy to make the transition.”

Kaczor ran for touchdowns of 4 and 15 yards in the second quarter for a 24-8 halftime lead. His final score came on a scramble on a third-and-3 play with no timeouts left and 10 seconds remaining in the half.

“We had a pass called right before halftime, and the play he made on that was outstanding,” Geier said. “He makes plays. He's like a fullback. He punishes and pushes. He doesn't go down easy.”

Kaczor's touchdown dive capped an 80-yard drive on the 100-yard field that started when Burwell safety Cody Gurney picked off a Derek Classen pass in the other end zone.

Kaczor added a 10-yard touchdown pass to Overton's Drew Carr in the third quarter after Classen's 1-yard score pulled the East within 24-16. Classen, from Humphrey St. Francis, scored again with 4:13 left, but the West defense stopped him on the two-point try to keep it a two-possession game.

The East opened the scoring on a record 70-yard pass from Classen to Hampton's Dwayne Wall. Kaczor and Classen earned offensive most valuable player honors. Anslemo-Merna's Tyler Bartak was the defensive MVP for the West while Clarkson's Michael Konicek received that award for the East.
