Defense struggles in Gold’s loss to SOS

News-Times/Ken Kush Stromsburg-Osceola-Shelby’s Dale Kramer slides into third base as York Junior Gold’s Alex Obermier can only knock the low throw down and prevent Kramer from scoring. YORK – Good teams don’t need any extra help, but the York Cornerstone Junior Gold defense was in a giving way Wednesday night.

After a scoreless first inning, the Stromsburg-Osceola-Shelby Juniors took advantage of three fielding miscues by the Gold’s defense to score seven times and after they never looked back as Brandon Johnson and Kyler LeSuer combined to blank the York team 12-0 on a two hitter.

“We just need to be more mentally ready to play” said York Cornerstone Gold head coach LeRoy Ott. “In that second inning, we gave them six outs and you can’t do that with a team like that.”

While Ott said the defense let them down, he did feel the pitching effort by all three kids who threw was acceptable. “I have no complaints about the pitching,” Ott said. “They (SOS) started to time Chad Hulse in the second inning so I had to get him out of there, but he didn’t get much help from his defense.”

Also seeing mound time for the Gold on Wednesday was Landon Killion and Michael Powell.

In the fateful second inning, the SOS Rebels sent 11 batters to the plate and recorded five hits. The big blows came from LeSuer with a two run three bagger, a run scoring double from Jake Sempek and another RBI safety off the bat of Dale Kramer. Others picking up hits in the frame were Mitchell Walk-up who set the rally in motion with a lead-off single and Alex Snyder with a single.

The Rebels added four more in the third with a two run single by Seth Hoffman, an RBI single from Sempek and a SAC Fly from LeSuer.

Up 12-0 the SOS made a pitching change with LeSuer, and after getting two quick outs, Powell broke up the no-hitter with a clean single back through the middle followed by LeSuer hitting Hulse, and a bloop single between the pitchers mound and shortstop to load the bases.

The Gold’s chances to extend the game ceased when LeSuer struckout the batter to end the game.

“We need to put three phases of the game together and that is fielding, throwing and hitting,” Ott stated. “There are nights we put one or two together, but we need to put all three together. I think we are throwing the ball better, but we really hurt ourselves with the errors tonight.”
