YORK – It has not been a great season to date for the York Cornerstone Bank Legion Baseball program, but there is still time for things to change.
In the month of June to date the three teams, have a combined record of 5-21 record and overall the three Legion teams are a combined 11-30 on the season.
This weekend the Seniors play three games in Seward, the York Blues are scheduled for four games at the Central City Tournament, and the Gold have at least three games at the Ashland Tournament for one of the biggest weekends of the year.
Last Wednesday night the Gold suffered their 11th loss of the season, but head coach LeRoy Ott said the team, despite their record is starting to show signs of playing better ball. “We have to put three elements of the game together, pitching, fielding and hitting. Some nights we get two out of three, we just need to put all three together.”
The York Seniors started the season in May with a 3-2 start, but since that time have won only one of their last 10 games, and that includes a nine game losing streak.
York head coach Erik Gray said following a June game that his team has to learn to stop giving other teams so many second chances. “We are not good enough to hand out extra outs to other teams,” Gray stated. “If we field and throw the ball in most of our losses, we probably come away with the win.”
The York Cornerstone Blues are 7-6 on the year and won their last game 14-6 at home against Lincoln Southwest Pepsi this past Tuesday night. The team has had their ups and downs, and went through a tough two game weekend stretch at Seward two weeks ago, but turned things around and seem to be the only Legion team that is keeping things together.
“We just have to keep playing like we are capable of playing, said head coach Nick Wiehn following a recent win. “When we are struggling we have to make sure we don’t fight , because that won’t do any good.”
A lot of the problems for the Seniors and the Gold is at the plate where the Seniors have a team average of ,230 and the Gold are batting .192 as a collective group.
Both teams have also struggled with pitching, and a recent injury to YCB starter Ryan Salsman is going to make things tougher on the Blue.
July is just around the corner and with that, a few weeks down the road is the District Tournament.
There is still time for the local teams to shine, but they have to kick it in gear soon.
