YORK — Deanna Reetz has a ready explanation for the exuberant red, white and blue, patriotic Fourth of July display at her beauty shop.
“Not everybody’s doing Fourth of July in their houses,” she says of her holiday decorations.
She started her changing holiday displays 19 years ago, when she first went into business at 211 E. 16th Street. November rolled around, and instead of thinking Thanksgiving, Deanna told her husband, David, “Veterans are my heroes. I want something for veterans.”
David made a flag stand for her out of an old piece of wood. He drilled holes in it to support the dowels of eleven small flags. Deanna had a display ready for Armistice Day, November 11.
Deanna has a storage room as big as her main salon area, to contain her decorations. She scours garage sales for materials. Her collection spans all the holidays, all the seasons and as many original themes as she can think of.
She likes to make sure she has a new display at least every month, and they have to tell a story.
“I want something that talks to me when I put it up,” she says.
This week, Betsy Ross is riding in a Fourth of July parade across Deanna’s front window.
Deanna has been able to put something together every month for years, “Except August,” she says. “August has me puzzled.”
She tried a school theme, she says, with little slates and school buses.
“It wasn’t right,” she says. If anybody comes up with an idea, I would love to hear it.”
She’s happy to pull out her red, white and blue several times a year. Her original Veteran’s Day idea, with a little tweaking, loans itself to Flag Day, Memorial Day, and, of course, Independence Day.
Deanne smiles. “Fourth of July is my favorite.”
