Fillmore Central FBLA receives top recognition nationally
NASHVILLE, TN — The 2010 National Future Business Leaders of America Conference was held in Nashville, Tenn., July 13-18, with over 7,400 participants from across the United States in attendance. It was the largest group of students to ever qualify during Fillmore Central FBLA Advisor Cindy Talley's tenure and also the most successful as the chapter brought home three top three awards along with being named a national outstanding chapter and earning the Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit. Fillmore Central High School students Cassie Beale, Joseph Chapman, Rebecca Eichelberger, Sally Moore, Sam Rickert and Alexander Shaner along with their adviser, Cindy Talley, traveled with the Nebraska delegation, which enjoyed a day and a half of sightseeing prior to the conference opening session.
Upon arriving, the group enjoyed a dinner cruise aboard the General Jackson Steamboat. The next day they toured the Country Hall of Fame and Ryman Theater and dined at the Hard Rock Café. Throughout the conference, the group was able to visit the famous Broadway downtown area of Nashville which recently had been devastated by the May flood, the Wildhorse Saloon and the Parthenon at Centennial Park.
At the opening session of the conference, Cindy Talley participated in the parade of state presidents and local outstanding advisers. She also was honored two additional times at Mountain-Plains Regional meetings held throughout the conference for being named Nebraska's Local Outstanding Adviser.
The competitive events took place on Thursday and Friday with much excitement generated when both the parliamentary procedure and American Enterprise project teams made finals. Alex Shaner, Sam Rickert, and Rebecca Eichelberger gave the chapter's seven-minute multimedia project report before a team of judges who had the daunting task of narrowing down an excellent slate of projects from around the United States to the top ten projects. The written report, which had been written earlier in the year by Cassie Beale assisted by other chapter officers, accounted for half of the team score. Sally Moore, who had spent many hours preparing as part of the four-member Nebraska parliamentary procedure team along with three Wood River students, scored well to make final presentation status. Individual participants Joseph Chapman and Cassie Beale also took knowledge tests in the areas of Business Procedures and Sports Management respectively. All six students also participated in the open event competition.
Recognition received by the Fillmore Central chapter during the regional recognition sessions included the Hollis and Kitty Guy Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit and the national outstanding chapter award. Only a few chapters in the state received these prestigious awards given in recognition of active participation in programs and projects advancing the goals of FBLA. Alex Shaner, Sam Rickert, and Cassie Beale were also recognized for achieving Membership Madness status. Alex Shaner and Cassie Beale served as the voting delegates for the Fillmore Central chapter during the election of the Mountain-Plains Vice President.
The awards ceremony was anxiously awaited as the Fillmore Central delegation knew they had competed well. Top ten winners receive plaques with the top five places also receiving monetary awards. The first group on stage was Alex Shaner, Rebecca Eichelberger, and Sam Rickert who earned third place in the American Enterprise chapter project event. The group received a chapter trophy and $300. Next, Joseph Chapman was recognized for second place in the Business Procedures event and received a plaque and $400 monetary award. The parliamentary procedure team consisting of Sally Moore from Fillmore Central, and Jenna Woitaszewski, Brianna Turek, and Alexis Carter from Wood River were then named as first place recipients. They each received a medal, plaque and $125 award.
The Nebraska delegation of over 240 students, advisers, and guests traveled home on Sunday bringing home 28 top ten awards proving they had a very successful conference.
