Donald O. Pieper, 70, of Friend, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, in Friend.

He was born Oct. 9, 1939, in York. He attended York Public Schools and graduated in 1957 from Seward Concordia High School. He graduated from Peru State College in 1967 and earned his Masters Degree from the University of Nebraska in 1975.

He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army between 1961 and 1964.

He was a member of the Dorchester American Legion.

He was also a teacher, coach and principal at Clarks, Centennial, Friend and Axtell Public Schools. He was a former superintendent at Fairmont, Cedar Rapids and Dorchester Public Schools.

He is survived by his wife, Connie, of Friend; daughter and son-in-law, Raina Pieper-Volkmer and James Volkmer of Sherwood, Ore.; son and daughter-in-law, Tyler and Jennifer Pieper of Omaha; grandchildren, Abigail, Joseph and Evan Volkmer of Sherwood, Okla., Karlie, Cole and Cade Pieper of Omaha; brothers and sisters-in-law, Darald (twin brother) and Barbara Pieper of Lansing, Ill., Roger and Elaine Pieper of Lincoln, Glen and Laura Pieper of DeWitt; aunts, Mildred Kath of DeWitt, Dorothy Sackschewsky of Thayer; father- and mother-in-law, Wally and Barbara Bean of Inavale; sister- and brother-in-law, Marla and Tim Teegerstrom of Stromsburg; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Stan and Pam Bean of Johnstown, Ohio, and Bill and Elaine Bean of Lindsborg, Kan.; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Greer Elizabeth Volkmer; and two uncles.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, March 8, 2010, at the Friend Christian Assembly in Friend. Pastor Jerry Gill will officiate. A family burial service will be held at the Andrew Cemetery, Friend. Due to cremation, there will be no visitation. A family gathering will be held, to greet family and friends, from 5-7 p.m., on Sunday, at the Friend Christian Assembly (a register book will be available).

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
