She might wear a straw hat, then an old-fashioned picture hat, maybe a chef’s hat, she might even put on a train engineers hat.  I’m not sure what combination of hats Helen Waring Johnson of Geneva will bring when she entertains at the Fun Club Valentine’s Day party on Tuesday, Feb. 12. But I know everyone will enjoy her lively and lighthearted show which takes audiences down memory lane with musical favorites and her many hats.

Helen seems to have a hat and a song for every occasion. She might transport us to New York or maybe just take us for a stroll in the rain. And since she’s the entertainment for our Valentine’s Party we can be sure she’ll have at least one red hat and sing a few love songs.

Helen sings from the Great American songbook. We can plan on hearing a little Gershwin like “Our Love is Here to Stay”.  We’ll probably hear some Cole Porter numbers including “I Get a Kick Out of You”. She often sings Irving Berlin tunes “Dancing Cheek to Cheek” and some Jerome Kern like “You Were Meant for Me”. Whatever she chooses, I’m sure we’ll be totally entertained by this delightful lady.

In addition to Helen’s lively performance we’ll enjoy a scrumptious dinner at the Chances ‘R. The west doors to the Beer Garden will open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner served at 6 p.m. Bingo will follow the musical program. The cost of this fun evening is only $15. Send your check to the York Fun Club at P.O. Box 278, York 68467 and we’ll send tickets right back to you. Or you may stop by the Fun Club office or the News-Times reception desk to get your tickets.

If any York area businesses are interested in giving door prizes or bingo prizes, please contact me at 402-362-4478 weekday mornings.

‘Broadway Today’

We still have tickets available for the “Broadway Today” performance on Friday, Jan. 18, at the Lied Center. “Broadway Today” features the best songs from the past three seasons on Broadway. We’ll hear the most beloved songs from the new shows, the revivals and the long-running productions in one bright package. The performance will also include classics like a West Side Story medley and the best of Disney. A trio of New York’s top vocalists will deliver some of the most memorable music of the Great White Way.

Interested? The price of $65 includes dinner, admission to the show and transportation. Give us a call at 402-362-4478 weekday mornings to inquire about ticket availability.  “Broadway Today” promises to deliver one of the most enjoyable evenings you’ll experience this month.

Another popular show is headed this way in March. The Fun Club has purchased tickets for “Grease” for Saturday, March 16. The price of $65 includes dinner, motorcoach transportation and reserved seats. The show will be another great production of the Fine Arts department at Grand Island Northwest High School. David Sackschewsky is the well-known musical director who has wowed us with outstanding performances in recent years.

“Grease” is a 1950’s era rock musical. The show is set in 1959 at fictional Rydell High School and follows ten working-class teenagers as they navigate the complexities of love, cars, and drive-ins. We’re sure the Northwest H.S. cast will do an admirable job recreating the popular Broadway production.  Call us at 402-362-4478 weekday mornings if you’d like your name added to the list.
