Mystery trips seem to be gaining in popularity with Fun Club members. We tested this idea out about 19 years ago and it was well received. Thereafter, for a few years, we went with one such event annually. Now we arrange two per year (spring and fall) because of the extreme interest. Everyone seems to thoroughly enjoy these surprises.
We even have one couple in the Club which has been on every one of these mysterious affairs. And they’re going again in September! Our latest such trip will be on September 10-11, two days and one night. So you can surmise that we’re not going too far away.
Bernice Mettenbrink has arranged an especially appealing and unusual outing for those who wish to avail themselves of this “shorty”. Last spring we had a 4-day trip to the Minnesota and northwestern Iowa area and it was a blast!
We are planning on accepting up to 100 reservations for the upcoming trip and at the last count are at the 90 level. The invoices have been rendered with a deadline date of August 10th. Thereafter, we will know exactly how many more members we will be able to accommodate.
To be included, just call the Fun Club office mornings at 362-4478. The price of the Fall Mystery Tour is $185 per person.
Bon Voyage
It’s “farewell” for 12 days to 36 eager members as they embark on the long-anticipated Scandinavian Highlights to Denmark, Sweden and Norway. I have been privileged to have taken a similar trip twice and simply loved Norway. Bergen is one of my favorite cities in the entire world!
I know the members are going to have a ball, despite the fact that Sweden is one of the most expensive countries of the world.
Musical Thriller
Great reviews have been forthcoming from viewers of “Sweeney Todd”, which has been billed as a “musical thriller”. Because it is the production which inspired the Johnny Depp and Tim Burton movie. This is a revival from a previous Broadway sensation from several decades ago.
The plot concerns an infamous barber and his crafty neighbor who are intent upon crashing into London’s upper crust and nothing is going to stop them. But eventually justice is served.
This production features songs and lyrics by Stephen Soldheim, for which he received Tony Awards.
The Fun Club will attend this musical at the Lied Center in Lincoln on Friday, Sept. 26th and the price with dinner and transportation is $85. We have a limited supply of tickets available. Just call.
The Rat Pack
One of the biggest shows we’ll offer this season has to be the “Rat Pack” at the Omaha Orpheum Theatre. Who can ever forget the antics of the original Rat Pack: Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Frank Sinatra, Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford? Of course, these Las Vegas characters are gone now, but not forgotten!
Three imitators have formed a traveling trio which perform in the inimitable style of Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. These guys will present their program at the Orpheum Theatre in Omaha on Saturday, Nov. 8th and your Fun Club has matinee tickets for that show. The price will be $87, which includes dinner, busfare and excellent seats.
If you like great singing, some hijinks, a bit of dancing and hilarity, this show will be your meat! We have a few tickets still available, please contact the office for reservations.
“Counterpoint”
Another November event which will be most entertaining will be “Counterpoint Choral Octet” featured at the Grand Island High School Theatre on Wednesday, Nov.12th. The price is only $49 with dinner and transportation.
“Counterpoint” is an ensemble which has been giving concerts since 2002 all over the country. They are an a cappella group whose offerings range from Stephen Foster melodies, to Latin America music and even some African American spirituals. A few of their selections will include such familiar songs as “Camptown Races”, “There is a Tavern in the Town”, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”, “Dreams in the Dark”, “Tango Argentina”, “By ‘n By” and “Grandfather’s Clock”.
This may be the “sleeper” of the entire GI Concert Series. There are plenty of seats available. Just contact our office mornings please.
