According to Bill Winkelman it took forever to get the field planted in the first place — and then it rained; drowning the young soybean plants.
On July 15, Winkelman says he planted the field for a second time. Things looked good for two days — and then it rained ... again. By this time the three inches of recorded rainfall had no where to go. Nearby basins were full to overflowing.
“When the basin is full this is what happens,” Winkelman informs, “I replanted right before the last big rain. At the coffee shop they were already razzing me about it because it was so late. I didn’t let that bother me, but then came the big rain.”
After that second deluge, an interesting sight appeared out on Winkelman Lake. Drivers passing by the corner of ground reported a mysterious fisherman had been “planted” right smack dab in the center of it all. The “dummy” was just sitting back in a chair, pole in hand, enjoying the view. Bobbing along on the water around him were several colorful inflatable children’s floaty toys.
“I figure farmers don’t have enough to do right now because they’re not irrigating so they are out pulling pranks,” Winkelman states.
Winkelman says the plot of ground has been flooded before, but never to this extent.
The Utica farmer isn’t sure who to thank for the display, “I’m keeping track of people who ask me about it and I’m taking names,” he laughs, “I’ll get even.”
Whoever is responsible was determined. Putting the lawn chair, fisherman, pole and assorted floaties in place would have required a good set of waders and the ability to slog through the mud while carrying a lawn chair, scarecrow, fishing pole, three floaties, plus line and bricks to hold them in place. That narrows things down a bit.
The entire episode has left Winkelman scratching his head although he’s had a lot of fun with it too.
