York, NE —

The complaints come in all the time, the police say . . . motorists are making illegal U-turns at the intersection of David Drive and South Lincoln Avenue.

“It happens frequently and it’s dangerous because it’s such a busy intersection,” said Chief of Police Don Klug.

So they decided to see just how often and let tickets do the talking.

Officers watched the intersection for an extended period of time, recently — and in just two days, issued 25 citations for illegal U-turns (according to the records of disposed cases in York County Court).

All but one of the citations was issued to an out-of-town motorist, with the majority being from out-of-state.

Even though there’s turning lanes there, the biggest problem is that northbound motorists are making quick U-turns from the left turning lane into the southbound lanes — despite the fact there is heavy traffic congestion moving from all four directions at all times.

“And the Nebraska Department of Roads has it clearly marked there, that no one is allowed to make a U-turn,” Chief Klug continued.

He speculates that possibly some of the motorists are trying to get back to the interstate or maybe find their way to businesses on the west side of Lincoln (without realizing there’s a service road there).

Regardless, Klug said the illegal driving tactics happen daily — which became more than clear to officers as they monitored the activities there.

Each of the illegal U-turn citations garnered the recipients a $25 fine, plus $44 court costs.
