York, NE —

The race for county commissioner in Districts 2 and 5 will be the top local issue before voters during tomorrow’s Primary Election.
In District 5, two Republicans are running — Incumbent Bob Wolfe and Pat Bredenkamp. Because no one from any other party is running, the Primary winner will ultimately be elected commissioner — as they will be unopposed in the General Election in November.
In District 2, it’s a different story. On the Republican side, there are five candidates — Incumbent Ken Stuhr, Erick Brekke, Merv Ocken, Dean Blum and Kurt Bulgrin. The top vote-getter from among those candidates will run against the lone Democrat, Doug Deprez, in the fall.
Stuhr and Wolfe are incumbents — both have been on the county board for a considerable number of years. Bredenkamp is a former county clerk, who recently retired; Deprez is currently the county’s weed superintendent; Brekke is a veteran who is self-employed; Ocken is also a veteran, who is retired from the seed corn business; Blum is a self-employed individual who has experience running road equipment; and Bulgrin is a state legislative aide.
Only registered voters in Districts 2 and 5 will have the opportunity to vote, when it comes to the commissioners’ races — and they obviously will only be able to vote regarding the race that is within the district of their residence.
The commissioner candidates have submitted answers to questionnaires sent to them by the News-Times. Their responses may be found at www.yorknewstimes.com/election.
Voters will also have the opportunity to indicate their choices for the presidential, senatorial and congressional tickets, as well as a proposed state constitutional amendment that would authorize the legislature to permit certain cities to invest public endowment funds.
Voting will begin at 8 a.m. and the polls will close at 8 p.m. All early-voting ballots must be returned to the county clerk’s office by 8 p.m., in order to be valid and counted.
The polling places are the same as they have been in the past. The following is a list of where voters from certain precincts will have to go to cast their ballots:
• Stewart Precinct: Gresham Fire Hall
• Thayer-Morton Precincts: Benedict Community Center
• Arborville-Bradshaw-Lockridge: Bradshaw Community Center
• New York-Waco-Beaver-West Blue: Waco Community Building
• Leroy-Baker: Lower level of the courthouse
• Brown-Henderson: Henderson City Hall
• Hays: McCool City Hall
• McFadden: McCool City Hall
• All city wards of York: York City Auditorium
