York, NE —

Saturday afternoon and evening were all about living large in a bygone era at Wessels Living History Farm South of York ... and the food wasn’t bad either.

The brand new indoor, fully signed display of the farm’s namesake, David Wessels, was open so one and all could view the rows of old tractors and other vintage machinery.

Meanwhile just outside the modern exhibit building folks were touring the not-so-modern Wessels farmhouse. Between the two buildings a horse-drawn wagon went round-and-round providing rides to history buffs of all ages.

Off to the side in the mammoth Wessels barn it was square dance time at first, followed later by dancing for one and all to live music just outside the barn.

At the back of the towering red structure Bob Sautter and Todd Kirshenbaum — flying their Sautterbaum Catering flag — dispensed hot dogs, delightful barbecue beef sandwiches and cold libations appropriate to the family-oriented nature of the event.
Once the local square dance club was done, the Kramer Sisters performed dance music from the 20s, 30s and 40s.

Saturday’s barn dance was the first activity of its kind for Wessels Living History Farm under curator Dale Clark.
