With one day left for individuals to file for candidacy, in order to run for offices during the November General Election, the race for the Gresham Village Board is heating up. And in Benedict — there’s three vacancies but no candidates whatsoever.
In Gresham, the seats currently held by Cynthia Avery, Patricia Chapman and Amy Bender are for up election. None of the incumbents filed to run. But there are a number of people, as non-incumbents, who have officially stated their intention to run — Mark Fagan, Donna Rhoades, Karla Wait, Melissa Bloyd and Tony Cain.
In Benedict, there are three seats up for election, those held by Erich Heiden, Angie Hild and Brent Hager. None of the incumbents filed for reelection, and so far, no one else has come forward to run. According to York County Clerk Cynthia Heine, if no one files to run — at the end of the year, there will be three official vacancies and it will be up to the existing village board members to appoint three people to fill those spots.
When it comes to the McCool Village Board, there are three positions up for election — those of Brian White, Scott Norquest and Pamela Norquest. White filed as an incumbent, Pamela Norquest did not. Scott Norquest failed to file by the incumbents’ deadline — but later filed a write-in affidavit with the county clerk’s office. Heine explained that his name will not appear on the ballot — but it can be filled in by voters if they so choose. If he is the top, second or third highest vote-getter, he will remain on the village board. Heine said the write-in affidavit allows the counting committee to consider all relevant names associated with his, as his votes — in other words, if a voter wrote in “Scotty Norquest,” or “S. Norquest,” it would automatically assumed that the write-in vote was for Scott Norquest. If no one writes in his name or the names of other people, and no one else runs for office — two vacancies would be declared on the Benedict Village Board, and again, it would be up to the existing board members to appoint people to fill those positions.
In Bradshaw, all three incumbents — Terrence Werth, James Gordan and Kent Will have filed to run for reelection. No non-incumbents have yet filed.
The same is the case in Lushton, where Incumbents Lennett Siebert, Greg Saltzman and Mike Quiring have filed. It’s also true in Thayer, where Incumbents Faron Hines, Dave Flick and Barbara Drake are in the running.
In Waco, Incumbents Janelle Schachenmeyer, Lois Beckman and William Honnor have filed, as has non-incumbent Jeremiah Franks.
There are three positions up for reelection on the McCool School Board. Incumbents Doug Smith and Cynthia Bolte have filed, but Dan Miller did not. Non-incumbent Phil Hall has.
Any non-incumbents, who are interested in running for a position on any of these boards, have until 5 p.m., Friday, to file at the clerk’s office, which is located on the main floor of the courthouse.
