McCool Junction, NE —

The corn surrounding Junction Motor Speedway’s track was rattling with the roar of engines Friday night. Big engines. Lots of big engines.
A flock of 52 Super Late Models came to the 3/8-mile circle of dirt to vie for two nights of action. Presumably all those ... and quite possibly even more ... will heat up the dirt again when tonight’s 7 p.m. green flag waves.
Complete results were not available by presstime, however racing was hot and heavy under a mile-high sky over the track that sits on the hill across Hwy 81 from the village of McCool Junction.
Friday night’s A-feature winner pocketed $2,000. Tonight the 2008 King of the Hill will be crowned with a $3,000 check.
Also on the track Friday were the Quad Rods and Two-Person Cruisers, two of JMS’s every-Saturday-night classes. Tonight the Late Models are joined by NASCAR Modifieds, NASCAR Street Stocks and NASCAR Hobby Stocks.
Vying for King of the Hill bragging rights are two of the strongest Late Model touring series in the central part of America. Both the Midwest Late Model Racing Association and National Championship Racing Association Super Late Models are contending for hefty purse money. Both the MLRA and NCRA are sponsored by O’Reilly Auto Parts.
Information on results is available at www.junctionmotorspeedway.com or dirtdrivers.com.
Through nine NCRA events Kyle Berck of nearby Marquette held a lead of 145 points in the NCRA season standings over perennial champion or contender Kelly Boen out of Henderson, Colo. Jason Freisen of Sutton has driven his white Mr. Goodwrench No. 1F to seventh in the NCRA.
