Schuyler, NE —

When the York Cornerstone Seniors fell into the losers bracket Tuesday night, they knew that the road they faced to emerge as the B4 Area Districts champs, was full of bumps and roadblocks along the way.
After getting past two of those potholes in Schuyler and David City, the York Seniors trip came to an end Friday evening as No. 1 seed Daykin-Meridian shut down the Seniors offense to the tune of 7-1.
York fell behind early as the No. 1 seed scored three times in the bottom of the first, as starting pitcher Jake Staehr had to get past some early game wildness, before he settled down to pitch three scoreless frames.
In the meantime D-M starter Reid VanWesten was strolling through the York line up, allowing only a first inning single to Jordan Hansen, and a third inning safety to Kelan Walford.
In the fifth the wheels came off the bus for the Seniors, as the Daykin-Meridian Seniors scored four times, aided by two York errors, and all four runs being unearned.
York mounted their only real threat of the game in the sixth when Billy Grenfell doubled home Danny Zegers, but had another runner thrown out at the plate.
The D-M Seniors finished the game with only six hits as compared to three for the Seniors, but three York Cornerstone errors led to, too many second chances.
“I felt that Jake (Staehr) did a good , and he really battled,” said York Cornerstone head coach Erik Gray following the season ending loss. “You just can’t give up that many freebies this time  of the year. Both of their pitchers had good off speed stuff.”
Staehr went four plus innings and allowed five hits. In relief Aman Singh only allowed one hit and pitched two scoreless innings.
The Seniors say good-bye to nine players who played their final games in the Cornerstone threads on Friday evening. Those who will move on are; Grenfell, Hansen, Evan Keelan-White (who could not play in the tournament due to an injury), Kevin Koester, Cole Robinson, Staehr, Walford, Jacob Wiehn and Danny Zegers.
“This was a great bunch of kids to work with. No problems, great attitudes and showed nothing but respect to the coaches,” Gray said. “We talked on our way up here how much we would miss this group.”
The York Seniors finish the year with a 16-15 mark.
