Sutton, NE —

Even with the D-3 District Track Meet being moved to Sutton from McCool Junction, the McCool Mustang boys team still performed like they were enjoying a little home cooking.

McCool Junction Q’d athletes in six events and eeked out a 91-90 win over the Lawrence-Nelson Raiders to capture the boys team title.

Back in third place was Hampton only two points behind with 88.

On the girls side, Clay Center won the team title with 112.33, second went to Lawrence-Nelson, while McCool’s girls tallied 92.33 for third place. Hampton was back in eighth place with 22 points.

In the triple jump and long jump the competition came down to two competitors, Dwayne Wall of Hampton and Kyle Smith of MCJ. Both took one event each as Smith went 42-5 1/2 while Wall was an inch back at 42-4 1/2. The results were just the opposite in the long jump where the Hawk took the top prize with a leap of 20-9 1/4, to Smith’s 19-2 1/4. Both qualified in each event for next weekend’s state track meet at Omaha Burke Stadium.

Wall also punched his ticket in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.2 for second place.

In the 1600 meter final, the Mustangs boarded two more athletes on next week’s bus to the ‘Big O” as Preston Bolte won the event with a 5:04.90, while teammate Damon Winn was clocked at 5:10.70 for second place. Winn’s second place in the 3200 gave him a little more work to do next weekend, as he toured the Sutton track in 10:40.10 to finish second behind Clay Center’s Jair Perez.

Another two event qualifier for the Mustangs was Dalen Hall with a pair of second place finishes in both the pole vault (11-4) and the 800 meter run with a time of 2:11.60. The Mustang 4x800 relay team also took the top spot and will compete in the first race of the boys section next Friday.

For Hampton, Austin Peters swept the hurdles winning the 110 race with a time of 15.6, and came back later to win the 300 race with a clocking of 42.7.

The Hampton 4x100 team will have to wait and see if their 46.0 time is one of the five fastest second place times.

The McCool girls had three district champions on Wednesday as they dominated the two longer distance events and picked up another qualifier in a sprint race.

In the 3200, Candiace Clark returns to Omaha next week. She won the race with a time of 13:16.30, while newcomer Jackie Mcllravy will join her teammates as she captured the 1600 with a clocking of 6:02.50.  In the 200 meter dash, Channa Hess bettered the field with a time of 28.3.

Caitlin Carlson is the only Hampton girl to make the Class D girls field as she took second in the triple jump with an effort of 31-3 1/2.

McCool’s Aundrea Morner tossed the shot put 36-1 1/4 to take second place and she will also be among the Class D field in that event.

The Nebraska State Track Meet opens Friday May 16, with Classes B and D in the morning session at 9 a.m, and Class A and C in the afternoon session at 3 p.m.
