It was 110 years ago that the first York High School football team took the field and began competitive play.
Over the course of the next few months the team and the town will be celebrating the past, present and future and commemorating a book that depicts the first 110 years of action with photos from the early era, to the present.
“This whole season will be a historic venture for our program,” commented York head coach Scott Kohmetscher. “There will be tailgate feeds before three games, and the night of the Seward game there will be a celebration, where we will honor all the past players that can be there. We will open the high school after the game and have film from previous years. We will put together a special program that will honor those players and even have some of them out on the field. We have created T-shirts to mark the occasion that are for anyone who is interested. Any past player who will be around for the Oct. 10th game against Seward is asked to join us that evening and contact the high school and let us know some information about you. This way we can honor the history that we all share in York.”
Kohmetscher said the book spans many eras of York football and for anyone who has been around the York football program this book will bring back a lot of memories and good times.
“We have also created a York Duke Media Guide. If you played football in the past 110 years, then you are in a team or individual photo. The book has hundreds of pictures celebrating our history. It has pages from past year books, it has adds from days gone by, and I have yet to meet someone from York who has picked up the book and not been entranced by eras that they have been part of. I think that it truly speaks to the history of York High School and the Community of York. The team is wearing a T-shirt this year that commemorates the history of our program and our team. The phrase “one town, one team” is the thing that sticks with people and we truly hope that people enjoy the book.”
Over the course of the next few months, interviews with past players and coaches will be featured in the York News-Times, getting their thoughts on being a member of the Duke family, and what it was like reliving their past through the book, and seeing pictures from days gone by.
If you would like to purchase a book please contact the high school. All proceeds will benefit the kids in the York Duke Football Program.
