On his very first throw, High Plains senior Derek Rodine tossed the shot put 50 feet five inches to win the event. That distance is an automatic qualifying mark.

High Plains and Cross County ventured north to Butler County on Thursday where both the girls’ and the boys’ teams threw their hats in the ring, trying to make the Class C field for next Friday and Saturday at Omaha Burke Stadium.

On the girls’ side, it was total domination by the North Bend Central girls in the field events scoring 54 of their team’s 140 points in the field events en-route to a 140-112 win over the host school from David City Aquinas. Cross County finished with 41.5 points for sixth, while High Plains took eighth with 17.5 points.

In the boys’ team race, High Plains battled East Butler for the top spot, but in the end the Tigers were just a little too strong, picking up an 89.5 to 80 win over the Storm. The Cougars were fifth as they tallied 68 points.

Qualifying for next weekends “Big Show” for the Storm boys was senior Marcus Bender in two events. The Storm thrower won the discus event with an effort of 143-8, and his second place finish in the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.7 got him another ticket to Omaha.

Another double qualifier for High Plains was Robert Klingsporn as he made it in both the 100 and 200 meter runs with second places in both. In the 100 he was clocked at 11.3, while in the 200 his time was 23.6.

In the shot put, High Plains’ Derek Rodine stepped to the circle and fired off a throw of 50 feet five inches and that was good enough for an automatic qualifying throw, and also good enough to win the event.

The Cougars Q’d up two athletes and will have to wait and see if their second place finish in the 3200 relay will be good enough to make the grade.

In the triple jump Isaac Moore went 42-5 1/4 to take second place, while Heath Leitz came into the district with the top time in the 3200 meter run, and he went on to win the race in a time of 10:44.20.

In the 800, Daniel Meradith ran a 2:04.70 to take the top spot in the race and join the Class C field.

The 4x800 relay team of Justin Hackenkamp, Daniel Meradith, Heath Leitz and Daniel Relihan led pretty much the entire way, but in the home stretch Fullerton pulled ahead and was timed at 8:37.20 to the Cougars’ 8:37.3. Cross County should no today sometime if that will qualify for state.

It was a tough field in the girls portion as only two girls, one from each Cross County and High Plains were able to get a ticket to board the bus next weekend.

In the 3200 meter run, Cross County’s Ashley Westring held the lead for nearly the entire race, but could not hold off David City’s Elizabeth Eberle at the end. Westring ran 12:42.60, her best time of the year and finished second.

For High Plains freshman Melissa Sundberg, it was a 13 second win for in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:49.80. That was a five second improvement from her best time of the year coming in.

The Nebraska State Track Meet opens next Friday morning with the first session getting underway at 9 a.m., featuring Class B and D athletes. The afternoon session starts at 3 p.m. and Classes A and C will be in action.
