Trying to score, Golden Eagle Megan Fletcher is cut down at the plate as the Geneva Welding Sparks catcher applies the tag just before Fletcher touches home plate. York struggled offensively in a 14-0 loss in the first of two games.

York, NE —

A few bolts of lightning delayed the York Golden Eagles 14-U, Geneva Welding Sparks game Wednesday night, but once action resumed, nothing could stop the Sparks.
York was looking for one last good tune up before heading to Hastings on Friday, but what they got was a Sparks team who is also gearing up for their State Tournament next weekend.
The Sparks led 1-0 when light rain and lightning forced a short delay, but after that, Geneva rolled to an easy 14-0 win in five frames.
York did not record their first hit until the fifth inning when Lorinda Ocken singled with one out.
The York State Bank Golden Eagles struggled at the plate and in the field, and will have to shore up a few things if they want to be successful in Hastings.
The Sparks led 1-0 after the first and 4-0 after the second, and extended their lead to 6-0 with two more in the third.
The Sparks continued to roll up the score as they added three in the fourth and five more in the fifth.
York had two runners on in the first inning, another in scoring position in the second, and two more in the third, but could not get the big hit when they needed it.
The Golden Eagles will travel to the Bill Smith Softball Complex in Hastings on Friday where they open Class B State Tournament action with a 4:15 p.m. battle with the Titan Twisters.
The Geneva Welding Sparks will be in Auburn, July 11-13 for the Class C State Tournament. They will play at 8 a.m. on Saturday against the winner of a Friday night’s game between the Arlington Vets and the Holdrege Heat.
