The York Cornerstone Junior Gold and Waverly “B” played a close game to the finish, with York rallying late to earn the victory.
In the top of the third, Waverly had two singles and was awarded a run on a balk. York once again answered in the bottom of the third when Logan Killion walked and came home to score on a throwing error by Waverly’s catcher.
Wouldn’t you know it, Waverly scored one run again in the top of the fourth, this time thanks in large part to two York errors. As they’d been doing all game, the Gold answered the call. Evan Norton led off the bottom of the fourth with an infield single and came home on Kopcho’s second RBI of the contest.
In the fifth, Waverly broke the one-run inning trend and put a three spot on the board, once again aided by two York errors. York cut the 6-3 lead to 6-4 when Nate Brackhan, who had doubled to lead off the inning, came home on a wild pitch.
Things were silent for both teams offensively in the sixth inning and the score remained 6-4 heading into the seventh.
On the mound, Connor Zumpfe did in the seventh as he had done in the sixth, breezed through the Waverly batters. Trailing by two runs, York needed to get its bats going.
Zach Chohon led off the inning with a walk and things looked promising for York with the top of their lineup coming up. After an ill-advised sacrifice bunt attempt was popped into a double play, things didn’t look so good for the Gold.
That was until Connor Zumpfe reached base and was driven in by a Logan Killion double. Killion came home on an RBI single that was laced up the middle by Zach Taylor. Taylor advanced to second on an error by the center fielder and York had a runner in scoring position with a chance to win. Two wild pitches later, Taylor crossed home and York did just that.
To follow up their 7-6 victory the Gold will play again at 7:00 tonight at Valparaiso.
