In the Class B4 District basketball championship, the York Boys defeated Crete to earn their state ticket. This came after a regular season loss to the Cardinals.
Even though they say that lightning does not strike twice in the same spot, York’s win over Crete in the Class B3 District Track Meet on Thursday, was pretty close.
After having settled for second to the Cardinals at the Yowell Invitational, and third behind the second place Crete team at the Central Conference Meet, the Dukes picked the perfect time to end that string.
York tallied 108 points and qualified 14 athletes for next weekends State Track meet at Omaha Burke Stadium. Crete took second with 99 points, while the Centennial Broncos scored 14 and finished ninth in a ten team field.
In the girls team race it came down to Seward and Beatrice battling it out for the top spot, with the Jays scoring 119.5 points to the Lady Orange 113. Third place went to Crete with 74, Fairbury notched 60 points for fourth, while York was charted with 56 points and a fifth place finish. The Broncos were seventh with 25.5 points.
A good portion of the Duke qualifiers on the boys side came in all three relay events. York’s team of Noah Dorcey, Derek Dauel, Scott Nannen and Zac Groenke won the 3200 with a clocking of 8:20.80. Two second place finishes in both the 400 and the 1600 relay events, were both good enough to make the field with one of the five best second place times. The 400 relay team consists of Reid Roemmich, Billy Grenfell, Landon Berg and Tommy Brown, while the 1600 has Grenfell, Dauel, Nannen and Groenke.
York senior Teran Walford had a banner day as he qualified in three individual events. Walford kept up his dominance in the hurdles winning both the 110 HH (14.60) and the 300 IH with a time of 40.40. His 12-8 effort in the pole vault also earned him a third place finish and another invitation to the “Big O”. In the 110 HH, joining Walford will be Ty Branz who took third and also Q’d for the state finals.
A pair of qualifiers came from both the 1600 and 3200 races, as Brett Grieb won the mile in a time of 4:35.60, while taking fourth was Groenke with his time being 4:39.70. In the 3200, third went to Dylan Obermier and fourth to Alex Adams.
In the shot put, Kevin Koester tossed the weighted ball 47-9 3/4 to take second place.
The only Centennial athlete on the boys side to make the state meet was Tyler Wullenwaber, a sophomore. Wullenwaber took second in the long jump with a leap of 21-9.
The Duke girls have nine ready to board the bus next weekend to Omaha Burke Stadium, while the Broncos will be sending three athletes.
The only district champion for the York girls was junior Jessica Driewer as she took the top spot in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:25.0.
Sophomore Carly Grenfell qualified in two individual events as she ran a 1:01.30 400 meter dash for third place, and she cleared 9-4 to add another third in the vault. A third in the high jump netted Brittani Smith an invite, while the Dukes quad of Grenfell, Kristin DeBoer, Sarah Norquest and Jamie Huber also made the field for the 400 relay race.
Two York girls will be competing in the 3200 meter run as Ashley Ermer’s second place (11:57.50) and Kassie Blatter’s fourth (12:20.20) earned them both a ticket. In the 100 HH York sophomore Elizabeth Spellman took third with her time being 16.3 and she will be among the three heat field on Friday morning.
For the Centennial team, Jackie Ziemke threw the shot put 37-11 and that place her third in the district and that was good enough to get her an invite to next weekends meet. The Broncos also got a qualifying effort from Angela Naber in the 400 as she took fourth with a time of 1:02.80, while Danielle Mooney also took fourth with a time of 2:28.70 in the 800 meter run.
