The 6351 yard par 72 course can be a very tricky section of real-estate to maneuver, especially if the wind is blowing, and it was howling on Monday.
York’s Preston Burk carded a round of 81 (38-43), and that was good enough to tie for second overall and earn the senior a trip to next week’s state tournament at Pioneers Golf Course in Lincoln which opens on Tuesday May 20, and concludes on Wednesday May 21.
Other than Burk’s 81, the next best score for the Dukes was an 89 by Ryan Salsman (45-44), and with a 90 was Matt Hansen (46-44). York’s fourth score was turned in by Preston Jacobe with a 91. York’s other score that did not count in the overall scoring was a 102 by Bret Gardner.
“It was incredibly windy and the scores really reflected that,” said York head coach Dan Malleck. “Preston’s 81 tied for second and qualified him for state next week. The other guys struggled on the greens and missed qualifying as a team by 10 strokes. That was disappointing, but it was a very good season overall.”
Winning the team race was Aurora with 335 strokes, second went to Grand Island Northwest with a 340 and the third place team who also qualified was Hastings Adams Central with a 341. The top individual round of the day went to Kramer Lyons of Adams Central with a 78.
