The Broncos came from way back Friday night at home, but couldn’t quite get over the hump against the Titans of Twin River.
The prep football contest went to the invaders from Genoa by a touchdown, 27-20, but not until a furious Bronco rally finally fizzled in the waning seconds.
The Titans drew first blood right away, scoring on the first drive of the game via a 1-yard run. The PAT kick was no good, however the Titans looked strong on the opening march.
Centennial went three-and-out on its first offensive series. Twin River made the Broncos pay by scoring on their second possession in a row, this time by way of a 42-yard scamper down the visitor sideline by Mitch Reed.
Braylon Gierhan brought the home crowd to its feet by scoring on a 39-yard draw play up the middle. Quarterback Kendall Kucera’s slick fake on the play foxed everyone in the stands and, more importantly, left the Titan defense blinking helplessly.
That touchdown came with 1:59 left in the second period and made it look like the Broncos would go into the halftime locker room with Big Mo on their side.
It wasn’t to be.
The Titans took over on offense and promptly tossed a 44-yard pass to the Centennial 12. Bronco coverage was good on the pattern, but Twin River got a great catch with 20.1 ticks left. The reeling Broncos saw the Titans connect with a leaping grab of 12 yards for the touchdown on the next snap with 10.3 seconds until intermission.
That made the score 20-6 at the break.
Bad luck stayed with the Broncos, who lost a fumble on the first possession of the second half. A huge run by Twin River carried all the way to the Centennial 6. The Titans rumbled in from the 3 at 7:17 of the third period and things looked bleak for the Broncs in blue at 27-6.
Centennial righted its ship, though, and held the Titans scoreless the rest of the way to the gun. Meanwhile, Centennial put up two scores to draw within a TD and an extra point, 27-20.
Centennial wanted a chance to win at the end and they got with 19 seconds left from their own 48 ... 52 yards from forcing a tie or going for two to win.
The Titans staved off the threat with an interception, ran out the clock and breathed a collective sigh of relief.
The loss left the Broncos, whose gutsy rally from behind more than made a game of it, still looking for victory number one on the season. Centennial (0-6) visits Madison next Friday night.
