York, NE —

While it’s not exactly time yet for hoops on the hardwood, two York High students got a unique opportunity over the summer playing basketball. Junior guard Carly Grenfell and junior post Tara Nienhueser spent a portion of their break away from school competing against the best in the country for the Cornhusker Shooting Stars select basketball program.
The program divided selected players into two teams. Grenfell and Neinhueser participated on the Nebraska Adidas Judds CSS team.
Grenfell and Nienhueser were both approached by York High School women’s basketball coach Matt Kern during the season last year about trying out for the team.
Grenfell, a first-team York News-Times All-Area selection and honorable mention from the Lincoln Journal Star, explained that she felt her performance was subpar in her individual tryouts.
“I didn’t think I did all that well,” said Grenfell. “I went from seeing barely any playing time in the beginning to being one of the leading scorers by the end of the summer.”
Participants playing for the Nebraska Adidias Judds CSS squad travelled all over the country and faced top-quality competition, participating in tournaments in Raleigh, North Carolina, Lincoln, Nebraska, Ames, Iowa, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Atlanta, Georgia, Houston, Texas, Chicago, Illinois and Cincinnati, Ohio.
The tournaments began in April and stretched all the way into late July. The longest time Grenfell and Nienhueser were away from home was two weeks.
“All of the travelling was really hectic,” Nienheuser indicated. “It was a lot of fun, but very hectic.”
