The York Cornerstone Seniors lost a tough one Saturday afternoon at Levitt Stadium when they fell to David City 13-9.
Evan Keelan-White got a rare start on the mound for York and was brilliant in two innings of work, striking out three David City batters without allowing a hit. In the third York reversed its battery, sending Jake Staehr from behind the plate to the mound and putting K-W behind the plate. Staehr breezed through the inning.
York jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Cole Robinson and Kevin Koester singled and came home on wild pitches in the bottom of the second inning.
In the third, York added four more hits and five more runs to take a 7-0 lead. Billy Grenfell singled to lead off the inning and came home on a wild pitch. Robinson walked and scored on a K-W single. Jordan Hansen smacked his third home run of the year into the left field bleachers to score K-W. Danny Zegers walked and came in on an Aman Singh single to cap off the inning’s scoring.
Billy Grenfell came on in relief for Staehr in the fourth and received little help from his defense. David City tallied eight runs in the inning, none of which were earned. York committed four errors in the fourth and the inning was capped off by a David City grand slam with two outs.
“In the fourth Billy gave us a chance to get out of the inning and we made some errors,” head coach Erik Gray said. “We just lost our focus a bit and they made us pay for it.”
More of the same came in the fifth inning for the Seniors. Scott Nannen was on the mound when David City added five more runs to its lead. Two hits and three more York errors helped the opponent score the five runs, four of which were unearned. Singh came in and pitched two scoreless innings to finish things out on the mound for York.
In the bottom of the fifth, Jared Wiemer was hit by a pitch and scored on Grenfell’s third single of the game. In the seventh, Zegers scored his second run of the game on a double from Staehr. The two runs were too little, too late, however, as York lost the game 13-9.
Despite giving up 13 runs, York’s pitchers put together a fairly decent stat line for the game. In seven innings, David City had only eight hits, and of the 13 runs they scored, only one was earned.
“I think the biggest positive from today’s game was that we got some pitchers in who normally don’t pitch and they did a good job,” Gray said. “They showed us that they can get the job done when the opportunity comes up.”
Depth at pitching is always key when the postseason rolls around. York will begin its postseason Tuesday night when they travel to Schuyler to take on Seward in the first round of the Class B, Area 4 Tournament.
