Heartland girls win C-3 meet

The Heartland Huskies and the Fillmore Central Panthers put forth their track and field teams on Thursday, giving their athletes one last opportunity to punch their tickets to the state meet in Omaha on May 16 and 17. A very tallented field of runners, jumpers and throwers competed in the District C-3 meet, but most of them ended their season with performances falling short of the mark,  while a small group kept their season alive by placing first or second in their individual events.

The Heartland girls had a very good team showing by winning the district, this only two weeks after winning their conference meet on April 26th at Milord. The Huskies also registered a good number of individuals for the state meet. Malaina Huebert took first and qualified for the state meet in three events, the 3200, 1600 and 800. Lauren Klute and Cortney Janzen finished first and second in the 100 hurdles, and Katie Wilhelm placed second in the high jump. Marli Peters and Taylor Janzen also went one and two in the pole vault.

The Fillmore Central girls also had a good showing with a third place finish, two points behind Wilber-Clatonia and one point ahead of Tri-County. Morgan Kleinschmidt won the long jump with a leap of 15-11 and took second place in the 400, just behind teammate Katherine Roemmich who won the 300 hurdles as well. Christine Ochsner qualified with second place finishes in the 1600 and 3200, and the Panther girls also won the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

Thayer Central won the boys’ district title in a run away with 132 points. Heartland came in fourth with 62 points and Fillmore Central in sixth with 50.

The Heartland boys won state meet possitions for Chase Chrisman with a win in the pole vault and Kellen Goertzen for second place finishes in the long jump and 100 meter dash.

The Panthers scored a good number of points but were only able to qualify two athletes. They got a big win in the shot put from Tyler Salmon who threw the medal ball 48-1 while Jordan Uldrich took second place in the 800.
