Let’s just call Fourth of July week 2008, “Jake Week”.
After Jake Staehr hurled a gem Tuesday night in a 2-1 win, Jake Wiehn did the honors on Thursday night, battling to a 5-2 complete game win over the Waverly Seniors.
The York Cornerstone Seniors are beginning to show signs of pulling it all together as their hitting and pitching are getting the job done, but the most impressive part of their game may be their defense.
On Thursday night the Seniors played errorless ball and the win upped their season record to 11-9 on the year.
“I think that the first of the year was kind of tough on the guys with all the rainouts we had and all the games that were not rescheduled,” stated York head coach Erik Gray. “The guys had been waiting to get out and play and we were not able to. We were also missing a lot of guys at the start of the season, so now for the last week we have had everybody here. Just being around each other and getting to work with each other has been a big help for us.”
York took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Cole Robinson knocked a clean single to score Billy Grenfell who had opened the game with a single, followed by another single off the bat of Kelan Walford.
York starter Wiehn was in control through the first five innings only allowing one hit and baffling the Waverly line up with a good mixture of fastballs and curve balls.
Waverly finally got to Wiehn in the top of the sixth when Nick Schmidt and Boone Dunn both singled to open the frame. The very next batter Ryan Hughes hit a ground ball to shortstop that Grenfell was going to make a play on, but the ball took a bad hop and both Dunn and Schmidt scored to put the Lancaster County team on top 2-1.
“Right there I just told myself that I needed to finish the inning and get back to the dugout so our bats could get us back in the game,” said York starter Wiehn. “Our bats have been big here lately and we have been getting the big hits when we need them. They started to hit me and I didn’t change up much, just kept mixing up my curve balls and fast balls.”
York did just what they needed to do as Walford led off being hit by a pitch, a SAC bunt by Staehr moved him into scoring position, and Robinson followed with a double, that moved Walford to third, as he had to hold up and see if the ball would drop.
The very next batter, Evan Keelan-White gave the Seniors the lead back with a two run single, and York added a run scoring single by Kevin Koester, and a wild pitch later scored Koester to move the lead to 5-2.
Wiehn gave up two singles in the seventh, but a great throw by Staehr to Grenfell on a steal attempt, took the wind out the Waverly teams sails.
Wiehn went seven, KO’d four, hit three batters and walked one. Both runs were earned.
“Jake has been strong all year long, I think his ERA is around two or something,” said Gray. “The other night I think that is the best I have ever seen Jake Staehr pitch. Both pitchers, the other night and tonight were getting that first strike and taking the hitters out of their aggressive mode. Baseball is a funny game, and we have about three weeks till Districts. Records don’t really mean all that much, because you don’t know who the other teams played and the level of competition. I know who we have played and how we are playing, and we are doing the things right now to win games.”
York finished with eight hits, while the Waverly nine were held to just four.
The York Cornerstone Seniors (11-9) will host Dinsdale Auto in DH action at Levitt on Sunday July 6th starting at 1:00 p.m.
