Hastings —

York head coach Josh Budler was hoping to see his girls tennis team make some progress on Thursday as the Dukes hit the road to Hastings for triangular action with the host Adams Central Patriots and the Lexington Minutemaids.
After falling 3-1 to the Lexington girls, the Dukes fought back to split their action with Adams Central 2-2.
In the tie with Adams Central, both York singles lost, while the doubles picked up the pace and earned the tie. In No. 1 doubles against Adams Central, Michaela Fischer and Teagan Beck won their battle with Niemeyer ad Gottsch 8-2, while the two doubles team of Michaela Stuhr and Jessi James defeated Bohlen and McWhirter 9-7.
In the Duke’s only win over the Minutemaids, Fischer and Beck were on the ropes but battled back from being down 7-5. “Teagan and Michaela were not real sharp until Lexington was up 7-5,” said Budler. “Then they both picked up their level to win the last four games and the match.”
The Dukes were not able to pick up a singles win in four matches, as both Jeanna JHoffschneider and Sarah Sleight made their opponents work, but they were both unable to find a way to scratch out a win. Both Jeanna and Sarah lost their matches 8-1 to the Adams central duo and lost 8-0 and 8-1 to the two Lexington teams.
“Jeanna and Sarah were just outmatched today,” stated Budler. “They competed well, and made their opponents earn points.”
In No. 2 doubles, Stuhr and James lost to the Lexington team of Rachel Ostrom and Steph Straka 8-3.
“J.J. and Michaela played their best match of the season against A.C.. Their unforced errors were very low and they served and volleyed well.” Budler said. “We are looking forward to touching up some things and then play our best tennis of the year next week.”
York will join the rest of the Class B field in Lincoln starting on Thursday May 15 for the Class B State Tennis Meet.
