When the organizers of the Cornhusker State games back in 1985 had this vision, could they have ever imagined how crazy the state of Nebraska would be on the last two weekends in July?
In 1985 when the games first took place, there were 19 sports offered.
In 2007, over 12,000 people took part in the games that featured 59 competitive and participation sports. Representatives came from 81 counties in Nebraska to test their mettle in the sport of their choice.
The traffic is a headache, and the parking can be a real pain, but for those who know how to get around Lincoln and are aware of a few short cuts it’s not so bad.
The county of York was pretty well represented at the games as an unofficial count shows about 175 people taking part this year. According to last year’s statistics, that is up about 25 people from 2007.
There about 50 different venues across the city of Lincoln that are playing host to events featured at the games.
Some of the more interesting sports include; Orienteering (a race over diverse terrain using map and compass), Bocce (being played at the Abbott Sports Center), Footstock and even Foosball. The more traditional games such as basketball, usually draw the largest number of athletes, with soccer a very close second.
The games will also be taking place next weekend as well.
