Sixteen hours after defeating Schuyler in an elimination game at districts Wednesday night the York Cornerstone Seniors were at it again as they battled David City Thursday afternoon.
The matchup between York and David City was the second in less than a week for the two teams. This time the outcome was different, with York ending David City’s season and walking away with a 7-2 victory.
Kelan Walford got things going for the Seniors, leading off the game with a single. After Aman Singh sacrificed him to second, Walford stole third and advanced home when the throw down from the catcher sailed into left field. Jordan Hansen added a double in the inning.
In the top of the second Scott Nannen came in to score on a Danny Zegers double and Zegers soon followed on a wild pitch to give York a 3-0 lead. Walford added his second single of the game in the inning.
York kept piling it on in the top of the third. Billy Grenfell started the inning with a triple to the left field fence, running the left fielder through the fence in the process. Hansen followed with his second hit of the game, a single that drove in Grenfell. With two outs, Jake Staehr brought Hansen in to make the score 5-0.
After sailing through the first inning, Walford struggled with his control a bit on the mound in the second and third innings, walking five David City batters and hitting another. Considering David City added a double and York an error in the two frames, Walford did a remarkable job to hold the opponent to only two runs, stranding the bases loaded each inning. York led 5-2 through three innings.
The fourth and fifth innings were quiet as neither team scored. Both Walford and Hansen singled again to raise each of their hit totals to three for the afternoon.
Walford was pulled from the mound after the fifth inning in line for the victory. Over five innings of work the right-hander was on top of his game, only surrendering three hits, and one earned run to David City.
“Kelan didn’t have his best stuff out there today,” head coach Erik Gray said. “He walked six and hit another, so he put seven free guys on. But he battled. He didn’t give up, he didn’t give in and he minimized their scoring and put us in a position to win.”
With one out in the top of the sixth York got on the board again with a pair of insurance runs. Nannen was hit by a pitch and Zegers followed with his second RBI double of the game. After Zegers advanced to third on a David City error, he scored on a wild pitch for the second time to give York a 7-2 lead.
In total, York had 11 hits on the afternoon and struck out just four times. Walford, Hansen and Zegers all picked up multiple hits for the Seniors in the contest.
“For us it’s important to find a fastball early in the count and swing at it,” Gray said. “When we’re aggressive at the plate and put pressure on teams we do really well and we showed that here today.”
Singh picked up the save for York, shutting the door on David City over the last two innings. Coming to the mound from left field, he allowed only two hits in two innings of scoreless relief for York.
With the win the Seniors stay alive in the Class B, Area 4 District Tournament and will play the loser of Thursday night’s matchup between Wahoo and Daykin-Meridian tonight at 5:30.
