After going by the official title of the Yorkfest Soccer Tournament for the previous eighteen seasons, the tournament takes on a whole new meaning for a local family following the death of a loved one.
The tournament, put on by the York Pumas Soccer Club, has been renamed for the late Rose Mary Stahr, tournament director for the past ten years.
The Stahr’s will continue to play a large role in the tournament, as Rose Mary’s daughter-in-law Sharon Stahr will now serve as the tournament director and daughter Jessica Stahr will sing the national anthem. Husband and father Orval Stahr oversees the Cornerstone Sports Complex.
According to Stahr, the tournament is the “single largest sports event in York County, year in and year out.”
The tournament, held at the Cornerstone Sports Complex from Saturday, Aug. 30 through Monday, Sept. 1, will feature in the vicinity of 60 teams of boys and girls aged anywhere from under 10 to under 18. Saturday’s festivities kick off at 8 a.m. and will conclude somewhere around 6 p.m., while Sunday and Monday will feature games from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m..
Stahr added that spectators and participants should come early due to large crowds.
“We are expecting anywhere from 3,000-4,000 people this year,” Stahr explained. “We have participants coming in from all over Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and South Dakota. Motel space will be hard to come by, as York and all the surrounding communities will fill up spots fast.”
Participants and spectators not only will be treated to soccer action, but will also have the opportunity to purchase soccer gear, various food and drink items, even non-alcoholic margaritas.
