Grand Island, NE —

Last Friday night at Grand Island Northwest the York Dukes were whistled 120 yards in penalties on 13 flags.
That alone nearly cost the Dukes a couple of scores, and could have easily cost them the game.
This week with Aurora coming to town, fresh off a 23-22 OT win over defending Class B champion Crete, the Dukes are going to have to work on the penalty flags staying in the officials back pockets.
“A lot of those penalties are things we can control. Roughing the passer and personal fouls are easier to eliminate than ones like holding,” commented York head coach Scott Kohmetscher. “Our players have seen the film and they know what they need to do to fix those. That was definitely a focus this week to improve in that area.”
Aurora will be a team that will test the Dukes up front with a powerful running game and big strong interior lineman.
“Aurora has always had a great running game. They always have big strong lineman and they have great athletes in the backfield, this year no exception,” said Kohmetscher. “Rodriguez is one of the best lineman in the state, and the Lobeda kid at running back is extremely good as well. Those are just two standouts on a very solid team.”
The Dukes may be running the gammit of emotions with this being there first home game of the season, playing one of their biggest rivals and having injured Kody Killion on hand for the game.
“It could be an emotional mess for players, fans and family. The key will be the beginning of the game. No big swings, but after the first quarter it will just be getting down to football,” explained Kohmetscher. “I don’t see the Crete win as that big of an upset. Aurora is really good and Crete graduated some incredible players. I think our kids have seen the film and they know that Aurora is for real and we will prepare for them just like any other opponent. I believe that in Class B, every week is a big game.”
Kohmetscher feels that another huge key this Friday night will be ball control, and getting the running game untracked. Last week the Dukes finished with 304 yards of total offense, with 102 yards coming on the ground.
“I think we have to keep the ball out of their hands,” Kohmetscher stated. “Ball control will help us keep their offense out of rhythm and the game. I believe if we can keep their offense off the field, limit penalties and take care of the ball like we did last week, I feel we have a great shot at a solid W on Friday night.”
The Dukes and the Huskies will kick it off at 7:00 p.m. Friday night at East Hill Park.
