YORK – By the time the York Fusion 18-U solved Lincoln Rockets pitching, it was too late.
The York girls made a great push in the bottom of the fifth to stay in the game, but came up short scoring four runs in the 9-5. It was the first game of pool play in the Class B USSSA Tournament at the York Ballpark Complex on Friday.
The Rockets were on the board early and they did it without a hit.
York starter Lilly Cast had some control issues in the top of the first as she walked the first two batters with the lead-off coming home to score for the Rockets.
Cast would then settle down until the fifth inning. She struck out the side in the first and second innings and when she was pulled after 4 1/3 innings of work her strikeout total was 10 Ks and six walks.
York tied the game in the third when Kaitlyn Martin, who had her team’s first hit in the bottom of the fifth, walked and scored on a sacrifice and a Lincoln throwing error.
Leading 2-1 as they came to bat in the fifth, Cast got the first out which was her 10th strikeout. Then things went south.
A single and a double produced a 3-1 lead and two walks and a two-run single broke it open to 5-1.
Cast was lifted for Alexis Linder. Two wild pitches and a few more free passes had the Rockets on top 9-1 at the end of a seven-run fifth.
The Fusion did not go quietly in the fifth as Martin singled with one out, followed by a single off the bat of Jamie Hoblyn.
With two outs, lead-off hitter Emma Ziemba drove in two runs and Cast missed a home run by inches as she recorded a triple to make it 9-4.
Cast scored on Hannah Norquest’s bullet back up the middle, but the game ended with an infield pop-up to shortstop.
All five Fusion hits came in the fifth, while the Rockets ended the game with four hits.
York pitching walked eight batters and Cast had all 10 strikeouts.
Rockets pitching was responsible for two walks and just one strikeout.
The York girls had a late Friday night game against the Millard Fury in their final pool play outing.
The tournament resumes on Saturday with bracket play in the gold and the silver brackets based on Friday’s results.
