After the second lap of the 1600-meter run during the Yowell Track Classic on Thursday in York, it was a tight pack as Seward’s Keegan Beisel, Beatrice’s Mackenzie Hatcliff and York’s Brynn Hirschfeld and Maddie Portwine, along with Waverly’s Alex Danson, were all in contention. Hirschfeld and Portwine pulled away for a 1-2 finish for the Dukes, earning the York girls 18 points.

YORK – A good-sized portion of the York girls’ scoring on Thursday at the Yowell Track Classic in York came in two events.

Freshman Brynn Hirschfeld and sophomore teammate Maddie Portwine were able to separate themselves from the rest of the pack in the 1600-meter run and finished in first and second, respectively, helping the Dukes to earn the team 18 points.

The two teamed up again in the 800 with a first and fourth, respectively, and 14 more team points.

The girls’ side of the meet was dominated by the Waverly Vikings, who piled up 173 points and rolled to an 87-point win over runner-up Beatrice.

Waverly’s depth will make it one of the favorites to win the Class B state championship this year. On Thursday, the Vikings won eight events with Sydni Schernikau taking the top spot in all three sprint races, while Whitney Lauenstein won the 100 hurdles and the high jump.

York senior Hannah Norquest threw the discus a season-best 114 feet, 11 inches and took second place at the Yowell Track Classic on Thursday in York.

Third place went to Crete with 79 points while York was sixth out of seven teams with 58 points.
