OMAHA – After two-days of qualifying on Monday and Tuesday at the Players Club in Omaha, York senior-to-be Reed Malleck qualified in a tie for 23rd place and made the match-play field of 32 which got underway on Wednesday.
Malleck, went in as the No. 24 seed and took on No. 9 seed Matthew Unruh of Lincoln in the morning matches on Wednesday and picked up the win, but could not get past Dan Huston of Omaha in his afternoon match.
Malleck trailed early in his match with Unruh, but fought back and the players went to the back nine all-square.
Unruh went 2-up as he won holes 10 and 11, but Malleck kept fighting and got back to within 1-down when he won the 14th.
Malleck won holes 16 through 18 and upset the No. 9 seed by the score of 2-up.
In the afternoon, Malleck fell behind big early and could never catch up to the No. 8 seed Huston.
Huston won the first three holes before Malleck climbed back to 2-down with a win on hole No. 4.
Huston won holes 5 through 8 and stretched his lead to 6-up heading to the final 10-holes.
Malleck won holes 9-10 to get back within 4-down.
On No. 14 with a four-up lead and five to play, Huston won No. 14 closing out Malleck with the 5&4 win.
The championship will take place on Friday, June 14 with the finals getting underway at 7 a.m.
