GILTNER – Behind a combined 52 points from three McCool Junction girls basketball players, the Mustangs went to Giltner and left with a 55-45 win Tuesday night.
McCool sophomore Kierra Green scored a game-high 20 points while two seniors, Hadley Wiemer and Jillian Stark, poured in 17 and 15, respectively.
McCool took control of the game in the first half and held on for the win despite a Giltner rally in the second.
The Mustangs outscored Giltner 22-11 in the first quarter and held the Hornets to just two points in the second to take a 35-13 halftime edge.
Giltner rattled off 17 points in the third and cut its deficit to 48-30 heading into the fourth. McCool was outscored 15-7 in the final eight minutes, but the Mustangs easily held on to earn the 10-point victory.
McCool improves to 2-0 on the season while Giltner drops to 2-1. The Mustangs will host High Plains (0-1) on Thursday.
Green shot 53 percent from the floor and went 4 of 6 from behind the arc to go along with four assists in the win.
Stark recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds, six of which came on the offensive glass.
Senior Sydney Siebert dished out five assists and grabbed four steals, both of which were team highs.
Senior Ammy Hoarty recorded three blocks on the defensive end.
