YORK – With the start of the 2019 high school softball season a month away, the York News-Times will be looking ahead to the season by featuring the top 10 returning players from the four area coverage teams.

The YNT will be picking players from its coverage area, including the Centennial Broncos, Fillmore Central/Exeter-Milligan Panthers, Polk County Slammers and the York Dukes.

Two players will be featured each week until the start of the season, which will officially get underway on Thursday, August 22.

These selections are based on 2018 performances and statistics, as well as conference and all-state honors.

Week 1

Meaghan Rowe, York, JR (OF)

York junior Meghan Rowe returns this season with the highest batting average among returning players. In 2018, Rowe busted the ball for a .444 average, which was second overall in the final YNT standings and she led the Dukes in four offensive categories. Rowe crushed a team-high five home runs, drove in 27 runs and scored 28 runs. York head coach Danyel Seevers said at the end of the 2018 season that “Meaghan had a solid year at the plate for the Dukes.” Rowe patrolled right field for York on defense, and her efforts both at the plate and in the field earned her Central Conference first team honors. Rowe was also a Class B all-state honorable mention selection.

Daylee Dey, Centennial, JR (IF)

In 2018, Dey was Centennial’s leadoff hitter and she led the team in RBIs with 38, which was also the top mark in the YNT area charts, and she scored an area-high 47 runs. Centennial head coach Jake Polk said at the end of the year that Dey took a “huge leap” from her freshman to sophomore year. “She had the skills and the work ethic as a freshman, but appeared to lack confidence.” Dey finished the year with a .398 average, which was fifth in the area, and was fourth in doubles with 10 and tied for third in home runs with five. She was second on the team and in the final YNT charts in stolen bases with 20. Dey was a Southern Nebraska Conference first team selection and a Class C all-state honorable mention pick.
