YORK - Before York starting pitcher Mason Wright even took the mound Friday night, his offense had handed him a 4-0 lead.

Before the Fairbury Land Sharks were able to score four times in the bottom of the fourth, the York Cornerstone Seniors had built an 8-0 lead and were well on their way to the 14-4 win in five innings at Levitt Stadium in Class B Area 4 first round action.

Wright worked into the fourth inning and was credited with the win.

The York ace struck out five and gave up four hits and four runs before being lifted in the fourth with one out.

The Cornerstone crew scored four times in the first inning as the first four batters in the line-up, Mason Wright, Dana Hobbs, Andrew Clark and A.J. Beins all delivered hits, with Beins’ double the only extra base hit.

Beins ended the game 2 for 4 with four RBIs, three coming in the Cornerstone Seniors six run fifth.

York added to its lead with a single run in the second and two more in the third, one scoring on an RBI double off the bat of Wyatt Cast.

Fairbury plated four in the fourth when a three-run double by Brody Kroll proved to be the big blow.

The game was still in doubt when York came to bat in the top of the fifth leading 8-4.

The inning started quietly enough as the first two men went down in order with Kroll on the mound.

Then an error and singles by Cast, Noah Jones, and Dana Hobbs, along with Andrew Clark being hit by a pitch set the table for Beins who delivered a bases clearing double with the score 11-4 at the time and all but ended any hopes the Fairbury team had of a comeback. All six runs York scored in the fifth were unearned.

Working the final 1 1/3 innings was Noah Jones who gave up two hits, no runs and recorded one strikeout that ended the Fairbury fourth inning with bases loaded.

York finished with 11 hits as Beins was 2 for 4; Hobbs was 2 for 3 and Cast had two hits in three at bats.

Fairbury finished with seven hits and left a total of nine men on base in five innings. They also committed five errors in the loss, leading to a basket full of unearned runs.

While York is back in action today, the Land Sharks get a bye and will return on Sunday.
